Dermatologists are the Preferred Medical Specialists for Certain Surgeries and Medical Procedures

A recent survey revealed that a majority of people prefer to use dermatologists over other types of physicians for certain types of skin-related surgeries, skin biopsies, and several types of cosmetic surgical procedures. The survey results were highlighted in an article published on Healio.com entitled, Dermatologists Preferred for Cutaneous, Surgical Cosmetic Procedures on July 18, 2014. The article confirms that dermatologists are often selected as the physicians of choice despite the fact that plastic surgeons, primary care physicians, general surgeons, nurse practitioners, and/or physician’s assistants may be able to provide the same procedures.

The survey results discussed in the Healio.com article were based on an internet-based survey, and the survey consisted of 354 responses by “lay adult persons” in the general public. The question asked of the survey respondents was, what type of health care provider would you prefer to perform various cutaneous cosmetic and surgical procedures? The results of the survey were as follows:

  • Dermatologists were the most preferable provider to biopsy and evaluate worrisome lesions on the face – 69.8%
  • Dermatologists were the most preferable provider to perform skin cancer surgery on a patient’s back – 73.4%
  • Dermatologists were the most preferable provider to perform skin cancer surgery on the face – 62.7%
  • Dermatologists were the most preferable provider to perform laser procedures – 56.3%
  • Dermatologists and plastic surgeons were the most preferable providers to administer filler injections – 44.6% and 47.3%, respectively

The American Academy of Dermatology defines a dermatologist as a physician that “focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to the skin, hair and nails – and also focuses on maintaining the health of your skin.”

There are several reasons that may have lead to the conclusions reported in the Healio.com article. One such reason may have to do with the fact that dermatologists are highly specialized physicians. They focus on helping patients with very specific medical issues every single day. Plastic surgeons, primary care physicians, general surgeons, a nurse practitioners, and physician’s assistants, may be able to perform the same types of procedures as dermatologists, but they may not focus solely on dermatological issues all day, every day – the way a dermatologist does.

Besides the procedures mentioned in the Healio.com article, there are specific reasons that many people choose to see a dermatologist. According to an article that appears on HealthCentral.com entitled 5 Reasons to See a Dermatologist, the top medical services dermatologists provide are:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of skin cancers
  • Management of contact dermatitis and other skin disorders
  • Recognition of skin diseases
  • Dermapathology
  • Surgical techniques used to treat skin conditions

And, a few of the most common reasons patients schedule appointments with their dermatologist include:

  • Acne
  • Skin Cancer
  • Treatment of skin conditions
  • Cosmetic  Consultations
  • Expert advice
