Water is very beneficial to your skin! According to The Water Information Program:
- The human body is more than 60 percent water. Blood is 92 percent water, the brain and muscles are 75 percent water, and bones are about 22 percent water.
- A human can survive for a month or more without eating food, but only a week or so without drinking water.
The effect water has on your skin is substantial. It’s easy for your skin to become dry when it’s exposed to the elements. You may apply lotions to your skin on a regular basis, but the truth is that your skin gets most of its moisture from the inside-out, not the outside-in. When you drink enough water, the moisture helps enhance your skin cells and actually reduces the appearance of wrinkles. Sufficient water consumption also helps increase your blood flow. Increased blood flow helps eliminate toxins in your body. When toxins are released from your body, your skin will tend to look and feel healthier. On the contrary, if you do not ingest an ample amount of water, you will probably notice that your skin is dry and not as healthy looking.
Water consumption and proper hydration are good for your skin. When people think about the body’s organs, they automatically think of the internal ones – the heart, the liver, the kidneys, etc… But in reality, the skin is the largest organ on a person’s body. Given the skin’s significance and the fact that humans cannot live without skin, it’s important to keep the skin healthy. The skin is composed of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and the hypodermis. All three layers are affected by the amount of water you consume, and all three benefit from proper hydration.
There are several ways to help keep the skin healthy:
1) Keep it clean. Make sure to wash the skin regularly – and don’t forget to take make-up off before going to sleep for the night.
2) Use proper cleansing solutions – and don’t use soaps that are too harsh. It’s best to wash with gentle soap that does not contain any perfumes.
3) Eat a healthy diet, and drink plenty of water each day.
4) Apply lotion to the skin that does not contain oil or alcohol. It’s a good idea to apply lotion to the skin at least once a day.
5) If you are going to be exposed to dry air for an extended period of time, try to utilize a humidifier as much as possible.
6) Always wear sunscreen. This is important year-round – not just during the summer months.
7) Do not take showers or baths that utilize overly hot water, and apply lotion immediately after you take a shower or bath.
8) Visit your dermatologist annually for a check-up. If your dermatologist recommends that you seek additional treatment for a suspicious patch of skin or a mole, do not ignore the doctor’s advice.
Some people believe that water consumption has no bearing on the health of a person’s skin. However, skin is comprised of cells. Cells need water to survive and thrive. Without ample water consumption, the overall health of your cells will suffer.
