No matter where you live, summer is the perfect time of year to spend time outdoors. Warm weather is synonymous with outdoor activities such as barbecues, hiking, and time spent by a pool or on a beach. Being outdoors as much as possible during the summer can be fun, entertaining, and relaxing. But it’s important that you take especially good care of your skin during the summer because the extra sun exposure your skin endures during the warm months can be damaging.
Skin care tips for summer:
Wear Sunscreen. This is something you’ve certainly heard countless times. But it is worth hearing again: Applying sunscreen with a minimum of a SPF factor of 15 is essential. Make sure to cover your entire body with sunscreen – not just your face, arms, and shoulders. Also, it takes sunscreen 20-30 minutes to start working, so make sure to apply it half an hour before you expose your body to the direct sun.
Limit the Amount of Time You Spend in the Direct Sunlight. Even if you are protected with sunscreen, make sure to spend as much time as possible in the shade – especially between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm – when the sun is the strongest.
Re-apply Sunscreen Every Few Hours. If your sunscreen container claims it will work all day long, it’s still essential that you re-apply sunscreen every two to four hours.
Protect Your Eyes and Face by Wearing Sunglasses. When you don’t wear sunglasses on a sunny day, you will squint, which can cause wrinkles to develop. Also, sunglasses will help prevent sunburn on your face.
Regularly Apply Moisturizer All Over Your Body. Hot weather can dry your skin very quickly. Make sure to apply moisturizer all over your body as often as possible to ensure your skin stays hydrated.
Rinse Your Body and Hair After Swimming. The water in swimming pools contains chemicals, and the water in the ocean is filled with salt. In order to prevent damage to your skin and hair, make sure to rinse under a shower after each dip in the pool or ocean.
Wear a Hat. A sunhat with a wide brim serves many purposes. Not only does it help to provide shade for your face, but also a sunhat prevents damage to your hair that can result from the sun’s strong rays.
Drink a Lot of Water. During the hot summer months, it’s impossible to keep from sweating, and it’s easy to become dehydrated. Replenishing your body with ample water will help keep you healthy.
Always use Lip Balm or Lipstick That Contains Sunscreen. It’s easy to forget that lips are subject to sunburn. Make sure to frequently apply lip balm or lipstick that has built-in sunscreen.
